Diane Arbus

American photographer

selfportrait with her daughter

Born in 1923 in New York, she is married in 1941 with Allan Arbus, future actor, that offers her a camera. Her first girl Doon is born in 1945, the second Amy in 1954.
She collaborates early to Glamour and Fashion then she studies with Alexey Brodovitch, and encounters Brassaï.
Diane Arbus seeks to understand the world and became then the photographer of minorities: celebrities of circuses, freaks, dwarves, nudists, famille... different peoples. A first exhibition to the MoMA with Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand celebrates her work in 1967.
She suicided herself 26 July 1971, at 48 years, two years after her was divorced..

Everybody has its preferred photograph of Diane Arbus.
For me, it was the "Child with a grenade" (1962).
That I believed to be a snapshot is the result of Diane Arbus moving around the boy, claiming she was trying to find the right angle until the boy became impatient and told her to "Take the picture already!".
