The digital cameras Nikon Coolpix |
Parallel to its range of SLR-type digital camera,
Nikon put on the market since 1996 several digital cameras for mass-market and created a new range called Coolpix.
Nikon upgrades its coolpix offer twice per year, for the PMA and in August.
At PMA 2010, Nikon presents, like past year, eight new coolpix, with SD card and processor EXPEED:

The Coolpix S51 and S51c replace S50 and S50C, they have the same stabilized zoom (VR) 3x of 6.3~18.9mm
/3.3-4.2 (equivalent to 38-114mm in 135 format). S51 in available in silver or chestnut color, the S51C only in black.
The only notable difference is the sensor that passes from 7.1 to 8.1 million pixels. The S51C has in more a WiFi connection.
The Coolpix S510 is complete the S200 with the same design including a retractable zoom with optical stabilization
(and not numerical as on S200); this zoom is 3x of 5.7~17.1mm/2.8-4.7(equivalent to 35-105mm in 135 format).
It is available in silver, black or pink color and has a sensor of 8.1 million pixels and an increased sensitivity up to
2000 Iso.
The Coolpix S700 has also the same design, same functions but has a sensor of 12.1 million pixels, a stabilized
zoom (VR) 3 X of 7.9~23.7mm/2.8-5.4 (equivalent to 37-111mm in 135 format) and a maximum sensitivity up to 3200 Iso.
Just before the PMA 2007, Nikon reveals eight new models of coolpix that have all Nikon D-Lighting, Face-Priority AF and
Red Eyes reduction features. These coolpix have internal memory and use SD card.
The Coolpix P5000 is the alone representing the performance range, the decline of costs of numerical SLR
limits others bridges and expert compact cameras. The Coolpix S50 and S50c replace S9 and S7C but are thinner, they have a 7.1 megapixel CCDs,
a zoom (VR) 3x of 6.3~18.9mm/3.3-4.2 (equivalent to 38-114mm in 135 format),
an ISO 1600 setting, a large 3-inch screen. The S50C, only this model will be commercialized in Europe, has in more a Wi-FI connection.
Before the Photokina 2006, Nikon announced five new coolpix:
The Coolpix L6 replaces the L3 with 6 megapixels CCD, a 3x zoom and sensitivity up to ISO 800. At the PMA 2006 Nikon completes its series with seven new digital cameras that
have all D-Lighting function that corrects for under and over-exposure, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix that removes unsightly red eye and Face-priority AF automatically that detects and focuses on faces.
They all use the SD card and have an internal memory from 10 to 23 Meg depending of models. In September 2005. Nikon presents new five Coolpix cameras very different
but with as common functions as an internal memory varying from 10 to 32 Meg depending on the model,
the utilization of SD memory card (optional), a bright 2.5 inch LCD of 110.000 pixels and the three next functions: The Coolpix S1 is a smart camera of 5.1 millions of pixels with an ED internal optical zoom 3x (like the Minolta Dimage X) 5.8-17.4 mm/f3.0~5.4 equivalent to a 35-105 mm with 12 elements in 10 groups.
It has a new battery EL-EN8, the FaceIt technology, it is just a bit larger than a credit card and is available in three colors : white, black or silver.
The Coolpix S2 is the waterproof version of the previous camera with the same 5.1 megapixels CCD and the same ED internal optical zoom 3x 5.8-17.4 mm/f3.0~5.4.
It is just a bit thicker than the S1 and available only in silver color.
At the PMA 2005 Nikon completes its offer with five new cameras which have in common a 3x optical zoom, SD card and optional waterproof case:
The three other coolpix have a unique new feature that was developed in conjunction with Identix and their FaceIt technology : autofocus automatically detects a person’s face at typical portrait and focus on it.
The Coolpix 7600, smaller, has a 7.1 million of pixels CCD 1/1.8", an 3x optical zoom (equiv 38-114 mm/2.8~4.8). It is available in silver or black.
The Coolpix 5900 and Coolpix 7900, are also compact, they have respectively 1/1.8" CCD of 5.1 or 7.1 million of pixels, the same 3x optical zoom (equiv 38-114 mm/2.8~4.8) and a large 2" rear screen.
The 5900 is only available on silver and the 7900 in black or silver. Optional waterproof cases are also available.
Nikon has presented at the Photokina 2004 three new Coolpix cameras. These three Coolpix are EVF (Electronic ViewFinder) cameras. Before the PMA 2004, Nikon launches two new cameras the Coolpix 4200
and the Coolpix 5200 with a new more stylized design with metal body.
Nikon launches also the Coolpix 8700, a bridge camera, new flagship Coolpix that has the same magnesium alloy ergonomic body
than 5700 with a larger LCD monitor. It has an 8x zoom: 8.9~71.2mm/2.8~4 (like a 35~280mm in 35mm) with
two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens elements and the new eight megapixels 2/3" type (8.8 x 6.6 mm with 2.7 µm pixel) CCD. This CCD is a four-color (RGBE) with a new Emerald pixel added to classic RVB.
The Coolpix offers also many functions and AF and exposure modes.
In January 2004, Nikon has announced the Coolpix 3200 and the Coolpix 2200.
These two cameras are based around the same body (that is similar to the Coolpix 3100) and have a three and two megapixels CCD sensor respectively.
They use the SD card that generalizes for mass-market cameras. Both have the same optical zoom lens that has a close 4 cm macro focus capability.
This pair of entry level Coolpix digital cameras also feature 14.5 MB of built-in flash memory for storage without the optional SD card
or for instance in an emergency when the SD card is full. Nikon has also introduced a waterproof case for these cameras.
Available on November 2003, the Coolpix 3700 is an elegant camera that has a brushed aluminum body.
It is also the first Coolpix camera to use SD memory and to allow for TV-resolution (640 x 480 pixels) movies at 30 frames per second (fps) with sound.
It has a CCD of 1/2.7" of 3.3 millions of pixels(image size of 2.046 x 1.536 pixels and a 3x zoom Nikkor lens 5.4-16.2mm (like a 35-105mm in 35mm format).
The Coolpix 3700 can record up to five hours of voice or 20 seconds of audio tagged to each image.
Nikon has introduced with the 3700 a new rechargeable, Lithium-ion battery, the EN-EL5 that offers up to 200 shots between charges.
Available on September 2003, the Coolpix 5400
retrieves the same design than Coolpix 5000 but the CCD of 2/3" was replaced by a CCD of 1/1.8" of 5.2 millions of pixels (image size of 2.592 x 1.944 pixels.
It has a 4x zoom Nikkor lens ED 5.8-24mm (like a 28-116mm in 35mm format). It keeps the 28 mm wide-angle
and allows pictures from 1cm to infinity. Nikon has presented at the PMA 2003, three new Coolpix cameras. The Coolpix 4300 was presented by Nikon the 30 of August 2002.
It has the same design as Coolpix 885 with the 4.13 megapixels 1/1.8 inch CCD that is issued from Coolpix 4500.
It has also a lens zoom 3x 8~24mm, like a 38~114mm in a 35mm format. It has also a 256 Segment Matrix Metering,
a multi shot mode, twelve results programs, a high speed USB interfaces etc. The Coolpix 3500, launched in September 2002, for the Photokina has the same design and functions as Coolpix 2500 with
3.2 megapixels CCD. It has a lens zoom 3x completed by a numerical zoom 4x (allowing a theoretical variation of 12x of the focal). Nikon has presented the 29 of May 2002, three models Coolpix. The Coolpix 5700 is the first bridge camera of Nikon. It is built around a small CCD of 1/1.8" 5.2 and 5 millions of pixels
and a magnesium body. It has a zoom 8x (like a 35~280mm in format 135) with two ED lenses and may accept two optical complements. The “reflex” finder of 5700 is an electronic
finder as competitors. It is not an optical as the Olympus E10 and E20 that preserve seriousness favor. 5700 is rather the competitor of Minolta Dimage, Fuji FinePix and other Canon. Available on the end of 2001, the Coolpix 5000 has a large 2/3" CCD of 5 millions of pixels (image size of up to 2.560 x 1.920 pixels), and a 3x zoom Nikkor lens 7.1-21.4mm (like a 28-85mm in 35mm [135] camera format)
and a lot of sophisticated characteristics.
We may retrieve the magnesium alloy body but we lost the original concept of two parts body. Coming during spring 2001, the Coolpix 995 is an evolution of Coolpix 990 with the same 3.34 megapixels CCD but it has a new ion-lithium battery, an optical 4x zoom
(like a 38 - 152 mm f:2.6 - 10.3), a pop-up built-in flash and receives CompactFlash™ type II card (including IBM microdrives 340M and 1Go).
The body becomes squatter, its sizes go from 149 x 79 x 38 mm (for the Coolpix 990) to 138 x 82 x 40 mm. The Coolpix 880 was showed at the Photokina in September 2000 and has many common functions with the Coolpix 990. At the PMA of Los Angeles, Nikon showed in February 2000, the Coolpix 990, new version of the 950 model with a new 3.34 megapixels CCD and an USB plug for a data transfer of pictures at 2.5 sec. In November 99, the Coolpix 800 ends the new series with the same characteristics as the Coolpix 700 complete by a 2x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens. In February 99, Nikon introduces two new cameras with a New 2.11 megapixels 1/2 inch. They have a 256-element Matrix Metering system, a speed continuous shooting of up to 2 frames per second and stores up to 128 pictures on a 8MB removable CompactFlash™ memory card. They save images in uncompressed TIFF or one of 3 JPEG compression modes for different storage options Coolpix 700 has 4-steps digital zoom: 1.25x / 1.6x / 2x / 2.5x and High resolution 1.8" LCD display allows real-time viewing of shots. Coolpix 950 has a 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens and 4.746 steps autofocus control and Aperture and Shutter Priority exposure modes. It has a High resolution, 2" LCD display allows real-time viewing of shots. Digital cameras being subjected to the law of Moore: doubly performances of the sensors every year and reduction of the selling price. The sales increase quickly and numeric cameras become obsolete quickly. Coolpix 600 The first two Coolpix cameras are on the market in 1996. The basic model, the Coolpix 100 is really easy to use. The Coolpix 300 has some of the same features of the previous model: a built-in flash, a fix-focus lens of 6.2 mm, a 640 by 480 pixels definition with the same 1/3 CCD. This original possibility changes the Coolpix 300 in a numeric notepad. These two cameras had to face a significant competition and were served by a rather high price in spite of their originality For US market, Nikon has developed some special releases of Coolpix cameras.

RVBE Sony CCD
RVB plus Emerald

The Coolpix 2100 is a first price model. It has, as the 3100, the design of the Coolpix 775 and 885.
It possesses a CCD of 1/3.2" of 2.11 millions of pixels and a zoom 3x 4.7~14.1 mm/2.6~4.7 (like a 36-108mm in format 24x36). It has twelve view modes and,
like all the Coolpix, it uses the CompactFlash™ card (CF) type I. It has a response time reply improved. Its price is 319 € (March 2003 and only 99 € in March 2005).
The Coolpix 3100 is the same camera like the 2100 but has a CCD 3/2.7" of 3.34 millions of pixels and a zoom 3x 5.8~17.4 mm/2.8~4.9 (like a 38-115mm in format 24x36). It has fourteen view modes available and its price is 429 € (March 2003 and only 199 € in March 2005).
At least, the Coolpix SQ is a numerical camera with a cube design of 8.5 cm by 8.5 cm and 2.5 cm of thickness. The lens is a classical zoom 3x 8~17.4 mm/2.8~4.9 (like a 38-115mm in format 24x36),
that pivots as on the Coolpix 990, 995 or 4500. The CCD is a 3.34 millions of pixels for 3.1 real.
Comparing to the 990, it offers, besides its compactness, an extremely speed of response time (SQ means Super Quick)
and an ultra luminous LCD screen with contrast and retro lighting on 120.000 pixels. Its price is 549 € (march 2003).

In 2003, it seems that amateur cameras pass from 2 megapixels CCD to more of 3 megapixels CCD.

The Coolpix 2000 is a basic model, easy and ready to use. It has a 2.1 millions of pixels CCD and a zoom lens 3x 5.8~17.4 mm (like a 38~114 mm in format 135),

The Coolpix 4500 retrieves the swiveling design and magnesium body in of Nikon's 900 series with a new CCD of 4 millions of pixels and a zoom lens 4x 7.85~32mm
(like a 38~155 mm in format 135). It is the first Coolpix to have a panorama mode. It has also a superimposition mode and a mode allowing the correction of perspectives.
It is available in June 2002 at the price of 999 €.
Nikon has also presented a ring macro speedlight, the Cool Light SL1 specially designed for Coolpix cameras.
This speedlight complete the other accessories dedicated to Coolpix series: wide and telephoto adapter, slide duplicator, macro lenses and so on.

Coolpix 5700 display

Introduced in the PMA 2002 of Orlando, the Coolpix 2500 retrieves the swivel design but without optical finder.
This camera is for mass market and has a 1.5-inch TFT LCD monitor, a 3x Zoom-Nikkor lens with 5.6-16.8mm coverage (like a 37-111mm in 35mm [135] camera format)
and a 2.0 effective megapixels for 1.600 x 1.200-pixel images and a lot of sophisticated characteristics.

On the market in September 2001, the Coolpix 775 and Coolpix 885 are built on the basic of Coolpix 880, they are more compact and are also available in two colors silver or black. They have an optical x3 Nikkor zoom, a 5.8~17.4mm/2.8~4.9 for 775 and .8~24mm/2.8~4.9 for 885 (both like a 38-115mm in 135 format), a link USB and they receive CompactFlash™ type I card (and type II card for the 885). Like the 880 and 995, they are powered by a rechargeable specific battery (EN-EL1).
The Coolpix 885 replaces the 880, it has a 1/1.8" CCD of 3.71 megapixels, 3.21 useable and a numerical x4 zoom and the new technology PIM. Its price is 900 $
The Coolpix 775 has a modest 1/2.7" CCD of 2.14 megapixels and its price is very aggressive (less than 450 $) and constitutes its major advantage.
In first the 3.34 megapixels 1/1.8 inch CCD.
But it has 'only' a newly designed 2.5x lens zoom 8~20mm that is equivalent to a 38~85mm in a 35mm format.
It has also a 256 Segment Matrix Metering, a multi shot mode, several results programs, a quick start button, a high speed USB interfaces, new algorithms and of course an internal LCD monitor.
It is more compact than Coolpix 800 and is available in two colors silver or black.

The battery life management has been also involved.

In 1998, professional CCD is 2 Meg pixel and mass market CCD are near of 1 Meg. Nikon introduces two new cameras:
Coolpix 900 lays out to him of a sensor of a resolution of 1290 X 960 pixels, of a zoom three times 38~115 directional mm in a swiveling block containing lens and flash (like the AGFA ephoto 1280), of a monitor and a matrix measurement on 64 segments.

It is powered with four standards AA batteries and it has a base plate with the PCCard format that allows a direct connection with a microcomputer without it being necessary to use a heavy interfacing.
It has a built-in flash unit, a fixfocus lens of 6.2 mm with a 1/3 CCD of 330 000 pixels.
The CCD is 512 by 480 pixels.
It has also an ACL display that allows the view of the pictures.
These features are the same as the features of products of some other manufacturers as Casio but Coolpix 300 adds the possibility to write or to drawn directly on the ACL display.
