Negative inversion 24 x 36 |
After scanning color negatives, I used Photoshop Elements to reverse them.
The method I use is:
• I first use the command "Filter>Settings>Invert".
• As the result is often bad because depending on the mask color of the original negative, I correct the dominant with "Accentuation>Adjust color>Skin color" or "color variants".
The first alternative to this manual reversal of photos is to use a freeware like Irfanview which allows in a single treatment the batch inversion of several photos distributed in several directories.
The second alternative is the one recommended by Chasseur d'images (CI414), more elegant to remove the mask.
• First of all, you have to recover the shade of the mask and for that you have to digitize large enough to have an inter-image space.
• A first empty layer is created, it will be filled (paint bucket) with the shade of the mask removed (pipette) between two images. The overlay of the layer is made in "Difference" mode, which allows to obtain a positive image without mask.
• After that, you have to merge the visible layers.
• Whichever method is used, it is possible to use a "Brightness/Contrast" adjustment layer to adjust the density of the result.
For black and white negatives, I use the command "Accentuation>Adjust color>Remove color".
