End of Photokina

The 2020 edition of the Photokina has been canceled.
In a press release, the organizers of the Photokina specify: “Even before the appearance of the coronavirus, the imaging market was already subject to highly dynamic movements. This trend will now gain momentum and must be taken into account in the plans for the next Photokina. Added to this is the fact that our clients' resources are already under heavy strain in 2021 - due to general economic trends as well as rescheduled events on the global trade fair calendar. The orientation towards 2022 gives enough time for everyone involved to design the next photokina taking into account the needs of the market, our exhibitors and our visitors. ”. The Tokyo Olympics may also be canceled. In this context, the next Photokina in 2022 will undoubtedly reveal a photo market very different from that of 2018.

In November 2020, La Photokina announced that it would indefinitely suspend its Cologne-based event due to "shrinking imaging market."

In a press release, Gerald Böse, President and CEO of Koelnmesse (the organizing company behind Photokina) said:
“Unfortunately, at the present time, the framework conditions of the industry do not constitute a viable basis for the main international exhibition of photography, video and imagery [...] This difficult cut after 70 years of common history have been very difficult for us. The trend in this industry, with which we have always had a close and confident partnership, is very painful to see. But we are faced with the situation with a clear and honest decision not to continue this event, a decision to which, unfortunately, we have no other choice.”
