In 2007, Nikon had launched in the same time the D3 camera pro and the D300 camera expert, both models share many common characteristics.
In 2016, Nikon repeat this operation with its new pro body, the Nikon D5 and the highly rumored Nikon D500.

The Nikon D5 replaces the D4s. It has a new 20.8 megapixel full-size Nikon CMOS sensor (5 568 x 3 712 pixels), a 4K (3840 x 2160 px) 30p / 25p / 24p video mode, a new AF Nikon MultiCam 20k module with 153 AF points, a new EXPEED 5 image processor, a 3,5" touch screen of 2,359,000 pixels XGA in standard 400 and a maximum frame rate of 12 fr/sec with continuous AF and 14 fr/sec with mirror up. it provides above all a sensitivity range from 100 to 102,400 ISO expandable to 3 280 000 ISO (Hi5).
The D5 will be available in March 2016 at a price of $7000 camera only.
The Nikon D500 has a 20.9 megapixel Nikon DX CMOS sensor, a sensitivity range from 100 to 51,200 ISO expandable to 1 640 000 ISO (Hi5).
As the D5, the D500 has an EXPEED 5 image processor, a UH 4K (3840 x 2160 px 30 /25 / 24p). It has the same AF Nikon MultiCam 20k module with 153 AF points, the same 3,5" touch screen of 2,359,000 points but also articulated, a viewfinder covering 100% of the image, a resistant anti-dust and anti-rain body with magnesium parts but no built-in flash.
It will also be available in March 2016 at a price of $2300 camera only.
Nikon presents also the SB-5000 AF Speedlight with Radio Control Advanced Wireless Lighting, cooling system for 100 consecutive shots. It is compatible with Nikon i-TTL and its guide number is 113 at ISO 100 and 35mm.
The new lenses: 300 mm f/4E PF, 24-70 mm f/2,8E VR, 200-500 mm f/5,6E and 16-80 mm f/2,8-4E have a letter “E” added to their name.
On these E-mount lenses, an built-in motor sends control signals with extreme precision to the lamellae of the circular diaphragm. This technology makes it possible to improve the stability of the auto exposure control during burst shooting. In comparison, the diaphragm blades of Type G or D objectives are controlled with a mechanical lever.
Since the electromagnetic opening is powered by the camera, the cameras D1, D2, D40, D50, D60, D70 D80, D90, D100, D200, D3000, J5 and all film SLR cameras are not compatible with E-mount lenses.
With this latest avatar of the F-mount , the connection between the body camera and the lens becomes 100% electronic. It was already made for the Nikon One lenses. Maybe we will see in the Future a waterproof DLSR in F-Mount : the return of Nikonos RS.
